A Lesson From Green Onions

Today I was cutting up a bunch of green onions to put into a salad of fiddlehead ferns or in Japanese it’s called “ warabe” or in Hawaiian it’s called “ ho’i’o “ . It’s so delicious! I woke up with such a craving for it , so I went to the store to get all of the ingredients.  As I was standing in the kitchen slicing up all of the vegetables , I saved the large bundle of green onions for last.  I sliced off the roots and then  placed them on the side with the idea to plant them in my vegetable garden. I put the roots in a cup of  water overnight. The next morning I noticed that the middle of the stem and the roots had already grown significantly in just one night! The next day I put them into the ground. As I sat there looking at these green onions , I had such a “ prompting” or “ thought” . We can all be like these green onions. These onions have been cut and sliced over and over  all the way down to just  right above the roots.  But when they grow back they are stronger , thicker, larger and even darker  in color and the roots seem to double in size. It’s as if after the “cuts” , the “ pain” , or the “adversity” , the onion’s roots grow deep down to seek  help and strength which enables the onion to grow back with a deeper  foundation , and especially with  more inner strength. I could so quickly relate to these onions with my own life and this prompting really helped to remind me that all of the difficult and stressful moments in my life  have helped me to grow deep down which enabled ME to grow back  with a deeper foundation and especially a stronger inner strength and I am thankful.

  1. Wow! Truly profound!! It’s hard to remember that adversity is a key ingredient of success. Especially while we’re in the thick of it. These little reminders really help a lot. Mahalo
